Keep Your Home In Top Shape With These Tips.

Disconnect your outdoor hose:
Remember to unhook the hose from your outdoor faucet before the temperature drops to prevent the water, that can’t drain from the faucet, from freezing. If the water freezes, the faucet will crack, causing a water leak.

Certain models of newer style outdoor faucets have a tendency to spray you when you turn them off with a hose still connected. Here are two simple solutions: hold the hose nozzle open while turning the faucet off or try turning the handle off very slowly. Both of these methods should allow the pressure to be released, thereby avoiding getting sprayed. Groff’s can easily replace these faucets with another style that doesn’t spray you.

Check your water pressure:
Excessive water pressure in your house can damage your faucets and plumbing fixtures. Certain areas, with municipal water, have higher than recommended pressure. To prevent damage, have your water pressure tested and consider installing pressure-reducing valves to provide the proper water pressure for your home. For more information, contact the Groff’s Home Comfort Team today.

Backup your sump pump:
Do you have a sump pump in your basement? During a power outage, a sump pump won’t run. Prevent basement flooding with a backup battery-operated sump pump. Call Groff’s to schedule an installation.

Close your garage door in the winter:
Remember to keep your garage door closed in the winter if you have a utility sink in your garage or a bathroom above your garage. This will help prevent frozen pipes.

Electric water heaters:
If you don’t have any hot water, here are some things to check. First check the breaker panel to make sure the breaker didn’t trip. Next check the reset button on the thermostat. If the reset button is tripped, push it in. If the reset button trips again, you’ll probably need to have your thermostat replaced. Call Groff’s to schedule a service call.

Gas water heaters:
If you have a power vented water heater, it is important to keep the outside vent (PVC elbow) free from obstructions such as leaves or snow. To re-start your power vent after a power outage or tripped breaker, unplug the blower then plug it in again. If the water heater fails to restart, call Groff’s to schedule a service call.

Going away? Turn off your water:
Turn off your water at the main water shut-off if you are going to be away from your home for more than a few days. This can help eliminate water damage due to a leak or excessive water usage due to a malfunctioning toilet. The main water shut-off valve is usually located in the basement close to where the water line enters your house, either from a well or public water.

Save water when you flush:
As a result of legislation passed by the federal government several years ago all toilets installed for residential use need to be 1.6 gallon flush. These toilets save water, but certain models tend to clog more easily than the older style toilets. In most cases using a plunger will take care of the problem.

Conserve even more water with a dual flush toilet. These toilets come equipped with a lever providing two options - the standard1.6 gallon flush or a .8 gallon flush. You can also purchase a dual flush valve assembly kit to retrofit your existing toilet, which will give you the water saving technology without the expense of buying a new toilet.
