Get the Highest Efficient Heating and Cooling With a Geothermal System

Geothermal heating and cooling systems are the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective systems available today.

The system works by tapping into the heat from the earth to heat and cool a home or a building, which can save 40 to 70 percent in heating costs and 30 to 50 percent in cooling costs compared to conventional systems.

Ask the Groff’s Home Comfort Team how you can qualify for a 30% tax credit when you purchase a geothermal heating and cooling system.

A geothermal heat pump system consists of the following elements:

  • A water-source heat pump
  • A closed loop ground heat exchanger made of high density polyethylene pipe (guaranteed 25 years or more by many manufacturers)
  • A low wattage circulating pump(s)

The earth has the ability to absorb and store heat energy. Below the frost line, the earth’s temperature is a constant 50 to 55 degrees. To use that stored energy, a geothermal system uses a water and anti-freeze solution to extract heat from the earth. That solution is then pumped through a closed loop piping system, which is buried in the ground and connected to a heat pump heat exchanger in your home. In the summer, the process is reversed and indoor heat is extracted from your home and transferred to the earth through the same piping system.

Geothermal systems also include a hot water generator (desuperheater), which diverts a portion of the supplied heat to the domestic water heater. This provides a substantial portion of a family’s hot water needs at a very low cost. Overall, geothermal technology offers the highest cooling and heating efficiencies of any system available today. Another benefit is that the system requires no defrost cycle and little to no supplemental heat.

The geothermal unit is located entirely in the home, and can be placed just about anywhere – in an attic, a basement, or even a closet. By avoiding outside weather extremes, the unit’s life span is extended. Field refrigerant connections and an outdoor air conditioning unit are no longer needed.
